Koala Your Travel Agent

Santa Fe... Iceland... Australia!

Travel is all about the human experience.  One reward for Matt and I as travel consultants is that we get to meet fascinating people, learn their stories and help connect them with the world.

Dr. Abi Blakeslee is one such connection.  We first coordinated and arranged an independent Iceland hiking adventure for her mom, who also lives in Santa Fe.  That was followed a few months later by a customized group trip for her mom to explore the six ancient ceramic kilns of Japan.  Each trip was so enjoyable and easy that her mom recommended us to Abi... from Santa Fe to Iceland to Australia!

Abi has a Ph.D. in Clinical and Somatic Psychology which now has her venturing to Brisbane, Australia, to conduct Somatic Experiencing consultations.  We have handled all her post-workshop travel holiday planning and this year it included a cruise up the Brisbane River to the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary.

Thanks for sharing your experiences and wonderful pics!

Cheers,
Brandon and Matt

Abi and a cheeky koala
Hi, Brandon.

We had a wonderful time with our itinerary.

I highly recommend the koala sanctuary. It was incredible to see so many Australian animals up close.

I have another Brisbane trip in April...  May go early and fly to Cairns to snorkel the Great Barrier Reef and do holiday on the front end of the trip.

You’re awesome and thank you.

Warmly,
Abi

Motion Sickness:  How to Avoid and Minimize It

10/3/2018

What causes motion sickness?

Our brains perceive and process motion mostly by relying on signals received from our inner ears.  Yes, it's all in our heads, but from a physical standpoint rather than mental.  Vision and physical messages from below the neck are secondary in helping our brains determine motion.

Motion sickness most often occurs when our brains have to rely solely on the messages from our inner ear and don't have any cues from our eyes or bodies.  It is also aggravated when we feel warm or hot, have a head cold other pressure-causing ailment (messes with the fluid in our inner ears), or have consumed lots of sugary drinks or sweets.

The Basics

Here are the general rules for avoiding or at least minimizing motion sickness without using medications.
  • Keep an eye on the horizon to help your brain understand the messages it is receiving from your inner ear
  • Have cool, moving air around you and avoid warm, stuffy conditions
  • Avoid moving your head around/changing its position while a vehicle is turning or in any sort of curve
  • Avoid sugary beverages and lots of sweets
  • Stay hydrated
  • Use sunglasses or shades to minimize glare
  • Focus on an activity that will distract your from your motion discomfort
    • Engage in conversation
    • Drive
    • Read
    • Listen to an audio book or podcast
    • Work a crossword, puzzle or other activity that requires mental focus
    • Watch a movie or TV show

Cruise Ships

Picture
  • Room with a view:  Have an oceanview room with at least a picture window so that you may see the horizon.  A balcony room is best as it provides a view of the horizon as well as fresh, cool air into your cabin.
  • Height:  The least motion is experienced on lower decks
  • Bow to stern location:  Least-to-most motion experienced while on the ship (cabin location and otherwise)
    • Least:  Mid-ship
    • Somewhat:  Aft (rear of the ship)
    • Most:  Bow (front of the ship)
  • Get outside on open decks for the horizon and fresh air
  • Avoid outside areas where you could experience the ship's exhaust
  • Eat in moderation
  • Avoid sweet, fruity beverages that might make you sick even without motion
  • Keep an air freshener in your room that has a clean, fresh scent like citrus or lavender (nothing strong or powerful like some flowers, fruits or spices)
  • Find a deck chair in the shade
  • Take a nap in a cool place

On the Plane

Picture
  • Window seat on the shaded side of the plane so you can have your shade open to see the horizon (even if there's nothing to see on the ground)
  • Avoid moving your head around when the plane is changing positions (turning, pitching up/down during takeoff and landing or during turbulent conditions)
  • Chew gum or eat something that will cause you to swallow frequently and in turn keep your ear pressure equalized
  • Stay hydrated
  • Drink cold beverages or consume ice cubes
  • Open your vent so there is fresh air moving (cool, not warm)
  • Dress cooler rather than warmer (you can always get a blanket or put on a jacket if too cool)
  • Seats closer to exits tend to be cooler than the rest of the plane
  • Step back to the rear galley to cool down (typically cooler due to the exterior doors there)
  • Focus on an activity that will distract your from your motion discomfort

On the Road

Picture
  • Sit in the front seat or where you can have a clear view of the road ahead
  • Keep the air moving and on the cooler rather than warmer side
  • Avoid moving your around during turns or while on a curve
  • Ask the driver to let you know when a turn or curve is about to happen so that you can look up and see it (never lower or raise your head as the turn happens as it can really aggravate motion sickness)
