- Take at least one liter of water per person
- Sun protection is needed (hats, screen, longer sleeves or an umbrella/parasol), especially mid-day and in the afternoon; Don't be fooled by the cool, refreshing temperatures in the mountains - the high elevations mean over one mile less atmosphere filtering the sun's rays than at sea level!
- Take your time and rest when you feel winded
- Energy snacks such as granola, granola bars, veggies or fruit are helpful for longer routes

- Santa Fe Canyon Preserve
- Easy loop trail
- Upper Canyon Road (east end)
- Atalaya Trail - Moderate to strenuous
- Starts near St John's College
- Mostly exposed trail on west side, so sun protection is needed especially in the afternoon
Hyde Park Rd/NM-475 to Santa Fe Ski Area
- Chamisa Trail - Moderate to strenuous
- Mixed sun and shade
- Borrego/Bear Wallow - Moderate and mostly shaded
- Each trail intersects with the Tesuque River and Windsor Trail
- May be taken individually or as a loop
- Loop Tip: The trail forks a short distance down from the parking area
- Going RIGHT (Borrego Trail) is less strenuous over the course of the entire loop
- Going LEFT (Bear Wallow) is overall more strenuous especially after you reach the river
- Big Tesuque
- Aspen Vista - Moderate to strenuous
- Amazing views of Santa Fe and across the valley to the Jemez Mountains
- Shaded in the morning and direct sun mid-day
- Wide road up to top of mountain above to the antennae above the ski area (5.5 miles one-way)
- Ski Santa Fe to the peak - Moderate to strenuous
