Classic
These major lines focus on the romance of cruising, destinations, traveling by ship and being at sea.  While they all include wonderful dining and live entertainment options, you won't find any theme park elements on any of their ships.
  • Princess - Destination leader / #1 in Alaska / Medallion Class innovation for elevated personal service and experience
  • Celebrity - Ships with swagger and elevated dining options
  • Holland America / HAL - Smaller, elegant ships / #2 in Alaska / Global itineraries / Emphasis on cultural enrichment through food, Discovery at Sea and live entertainment like jazz, blues and Lincoln Center strings
  • Cunard - British class and style with the biggest emphasis on formality / Regular Transatlantic crossing throughout the year (not just spring or fall for repositioning)

Physical Activities:  Options typically include swimming pools, hot tubs, ping pong, basketball, miniature golf, a walking track, shuffle board and other traditional ship activities.

Children:  All these lines will have some children onboard, but generally smaller numbers due to the lack of amusement park types of activities.  All these lines have kids clubs and designated kids-only areas for those between 1 and 17 years old.
Itineraries longer than 7 nights tend to decrease the number of children on board.

Active with the Ship as the Destination
These major lines all include great dining and live entertainment options.  Also, many of their ships include theme park elements like waterslides and water parks, ice rinks, rock-climbing walls, surfing simulators, zip lines, ropes courses and go carts.
  • Norwegian / NCL - Freestyle Cruising for an ultra-casual experience / The top line for Millennials and Gen X travelers
  • Disney - Premium experience for kids and adults alike with their ships and onboard entertainment being the focus of their cruises as much as their destinations
  • Royal Caribbean - The pioneers in onboard physical activities with practically every ship at least having a rock-climbing wall and surfing simulator / Royal continues to have the largest ships at sea with some having as many as 6,500 passengers
  • Carnival - The lowest cost US line with a focus on fun and creating a party atmosphere

Children:  Ships with theme park and waterpark amenities attract lots of families with children of all ages.  Itineraries longer than 7 nights tend to decrease the number of children on board.

Luxury and Boutique
These premium lines all include amazing dining aboard small, intimate ships with a focus on elevated personalized service and lots of inclusions not found on the major lines.  No upselling on board with these lines.
  • Viking
  • Crystal (undergoing renovations until 2023)
  • Windstar (Yachts with and without masts/sails)
  • Oceania
  • Regent
  • Seabourn
  • Paul Gauguin
  • Azamara Club

Entertainment:  These lines focus on destinations with onboard lectures and locally-sourced and inspired cuisine.  You won't find big Broadway production shows, but rather small venues and spaces designed for guest interaction and conversation.

Children:  These lines tend to have very few children as their itineraries and excursions are history and culture-based.  Plus, the premium price point dissuades families with children.  Ships do not have any kids' clubs or entertainment for children other than a pool.
